Khalid Qasim, held at the prison for 15 years without charge or trial, told his lawyer that doctors stopped force-feeding him and another inmate three weeks ago, and are no longer monitoring their medical condition.

“They have decided to leave us to waste away and die instead,” Qasim, 40, told his lawyer by phone for an article published by the Guardian. “I am in so much pain every minute that I know it can’t go on much longer. Now as each night comes, I wonder if I will wake up in the morning. When will my organs fail? When will my heart stop? I am slowly slipping away and no one notices.”

A good read. In summary, Obama's adminstration would have quite liked to close Guantanamo but couldn't be arsed to spend the time and political capital on it that would have been needed to make that happen.

Interestingly, the detainees legal status is that of PoWs, who can be held without trial until cessation of hostilities. Which is possibly never...

Was Obama blocked by congress from closing Guantanamo or did he change his mind?

Also as Guantánamo is in Cuba why don’t they close it?
Maybe the UN could help them.

Wasn't there a case a couple of years back, when a 'British' detainee was sent back here and then disappeared and ended up in Syria fighting for ISIS?

Since Guantanamo is full of innocents, you'd have thought St Barrack of Obama would have closed it down, wouldn't you?

It beggars belief that they can get away with this.

If they can't prove he's done something then there's a chance he didn't do it, but at least give everyone the chance to prove it one way or the other.
